Org. Setting and Reporting

The Social Development Division/Office of the Director internship is for 2-6 months.

 

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Director of Social Development Division.

 

The Social Development Division consists of three sections namely: 1) Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS); 2) Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section (SETS) and 3) Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS), covering the thematic areas of inequality and social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability and youth.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and assigned office, as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

? Assisting in research including with quantitative analysis and dealing with large datasets;

? Reviewing working papers and reports for accuracy and clarity.

? Developing policy briefs to communicate policy messages to non-technical audiences.

? Performing other duties as might be assigned by supervisor.

Education

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Economics, Statistics, Sociology, business administration or related disciplines; or

2) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

 

Be computer literate in standard software applications including statistical software.

 

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

 

Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.

 

Studies in social science, statistics, economics or other relevant areas required.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of an another official UN language is desirable.
