Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in Bangui. The Political Affairs Officer P-3 reports to the Senior Political Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

 

 Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the area of responsibility and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible.

 Monitors local, national and regional level political developments and provides advice. Promptly raises issues of concern to PAD leadership, provides analysis on possible causes, and offers recommendations on the way forward.

 Builds relationships with other Mission sections, other international organizations and local officials on the area of responsibility.

 Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations. Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.

 Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases notes, documents, and other information.

 Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.

 Participates in provision of secretariat services on official visits from Bangui.

 Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English with proficiency in French, or fluency in French with proficiency in English, is required.

Assessment
